T.HI.R.D. HINGES Total Hidden Rotation Device
In 2009 we decided it was time for a revolutionary idea!
Our fibreglass monocoque bodywork, 100% waterproof, solid, sturdy, aerodynamic was no longer enough; it was time for a bold up-grade!
The goal was to replace the old, dull conventional external doors made of aluminium and the entrance door (with their same old external frames, visible hinges and the same old generous amount of silicone, which would get dirty and go black after the first trip) with light and sturdy “flat-shape” fibreglass door and hatches, no visible hinges and especially no external silicone!
The reason that led us to invest in such an important and challenging up-grade was not only to improve the design, i.e. have the door and flat-shape hatches for a cleaner and sleek exterior line; the old aluminium hatches and entrance door formed a strong thermal bridge and interrupted the excellent insulation guaranteed by the monocoque. The aerodynamic style of the bodywork has always been our passion, but to ensure thermal comfort of excellence is definitely in our DNA.
Designing and moulding the fibreglass door and hatches was simple; we wanted them to close flush with the monocoque and without the usual old fashioned hinges popping out.
The revolution arrived by designing a HINGE THAT WORKS COMPLETELY HIDDEN and fully redesigning the entrance door, hatches and all of the rebates on the monocoque bodywork, which are now really automotive.
We have designed and patented our THIRD HINGE, solid, sturdy, made of Zamak Alloy, which works completely hidden inside the door on one side and inside the bodywork on the other.
Zamak is a non-ferrous alloy with a high content of extremely pure zinc, combined with small percentages of aluminium, magnesium and copper. Zinc alloys are characterised by extreme hardness and strength.
The Third hinge consists of a central body, levers, pins and fixing screws all made of Zamak. The slots, which are used to fix the hinge, are housed in the special “rotating bushings”, whose 360° rotation ensures ample adjustments. Each hinge is housed inside a protective shell made of cast aluminium. The shells are accurately positioned, by means of a mould, in the relevant points of the bodywork and subsequently resined to make a single piece with the bodywork.
